EDIT (4/15/08): Here are my poi v. 2. They're made up of two crochet cotton inkle bands with a random pattern (about 1.5 yards each in red, orange, and yellow), two light weight eye bolts, and two super bounce foam rubber balls.

These have been fun beginner poi. They're super adjustable, I can change the straps whenever I want, they don't really hurt when you hit yourself (they do bruise a little though), their comfortable, and I can take the balls off and put them in poi socks if I want. :w00t:

I recently decide to take up poi, and thought it would be more fun to make my own set. This inkle band will make up the cord and finger loops for the left hand side. There's a lot more band than I need, so the extra will probably get save to make a scrap band purse.

Nifty band :)
One question though. What is poi?

Poi is a form of juggling that originated in New Zealand. It involves swinging ropes with balls on the end. My goal is to eventually do fire poi. If you have a chance, do a quick search on youtube. It's kinda nifty.

Oh, I've seen that. Never knew what it was called before. Thank you much for the info.

Wow! I love them - they look like they'd be pretty easy to handle, too.

Man, have I wanted to learn poi for some time, but never had the chance... grand job, and inspiring!

They handle pretty well, but I need to add in a ball bearing because they twist and tangle a little. Since their heavier than typical practice poi, they hurt. :P I've been told by more experience poi performing friends that these are a lot closer to the weight of fire poi and therefore better to practice with.

I don't think poi is ever going to be something I'll be good at, but it's been fun trying something new. I've got some great bruises to show off too! :)
